Nusa Penida & Bali trip 2.0

Trip Bali - Nusa Penida Merdeka Day 2019

Day 0

This trip is quite a last minute plan since i bought everything a month before the trip date (Normally, I planned my trip at least 6 months ahead!). Since this was my second trip to Bali, i decided to cover Nusa Penida Island for 2 days and the remaining 1 day in Bali Island. Its just a short 3 days trip anyway.

I searched around to get a good photographer Supir. Its just a waste not to appreciate the beauty of Nusa Penida Island if my photos not being properly taken!

Me and my friend, Nurul, just two of us, took flight from KL (Air Asia) on Friday night so that we can have a rest and started our journey early morning the next day. Our Supir fetched us from Ngurah Rai International Airport at 10.30pm, after 3 hours flight and brought us straight away to our hotel. After 3 years not coming here, I realised there were slight changes to the airport, look impressive and modern than before.

Finally, after 3 hours flight

We reached our hotel and have our rest since Supir will come and fetch us the next morning at 6.30am to catch the boat to Nusa Penida Island.

Day 1

We started our day at 5.30am today, preparing for the next journey. Our Supir came at 6.30am and we have been provided tapau breakfast from the hotel since we left too early. The journey from our hotel to Sanur Port is approximately 45 minutes by car. Our boat will embark at 8.30am.

The crowds in Sanur Port. Locals and tourists waiting for the boats to Nusa Penida

Inside the boat

We reached Sanur at 7.15am and awaited to get into the boat for about 30minutes. The boat journey took around 45 minutes depending on the wheather and it costs Rp200,000 per way, hence you need to pay Rp400,000 for return trip.

Upon arrival at Nusa Penida, the Supir already awaited us since the agent had assigned 2 different Supir for both Bali & Nusa Penida Island. Our first destination: Broken Beach

Broken Beach

It tooks around 20minutes from Nusa Penida jetty to reach Broken Beach. Broken Beach located on the West Coast of Nusa Penida. You may rent and ride a bike to reach here anyway but since both of us don't know how to ride, we hired Supir service instead. What special in Broken Beach?

The Arch at the Broken Beach surrounded with variation of blue sea colour tones

The other side of the Arch.. Beautiful but no way to go down..

Don't forget to take photo here. The pool with green colour. It's not a sulphur but a natural colour. Nearby the Broken Beach

Basically, the beach had a little cove and it is called Broken Beach is due to the archway that wraps around the bay allowing water to flow in and out from the ocean. The arch of the Broken Beach has been formed sometime ago or maybe hundreds or thousands years ago! We never know...The arch is quite high and there is no way down to the beach, hence you may not see anybody swim around here.

Since we arrived quite early in the morning, hence lesser crowd and less interruptions for us to take photos :).

Angel Billabong

Angel Billabong is situated nearby Broken Beach and you may reach there by walking distance only. The signboard is clear hence, no worries since you will reach at the right place to see the magical of His creation. I just wondered how the place got its name actually, since I cannot see any angle around hehe..

The signboard of Angle Billabong

The textures and the colours. Perfect combinations!

Once you reached the spot, (preferably early morning since the crowd is always huge here), you may see the crystal clear water with the mixture colour of emerald green and variation of blue colour tones not forget the unique patterns and textures beneath the surface. Very amazing!! Subhanallah...

Depending on the time of the day, the sun shining will impact the color of the water, rocks and what type of reflection the pool gives. We visited around 10am in the morning, so, this is the colour impact that we got....

Kelingking Beach

Next, we proceeded our journey to Kelingking Beach which situated around 40 minutes from Angel Billabong. The road is horrible but still acceptable huhu...

The shape of T Rex cliff

Way to go down to the beach

This beach got its name from the smallest finger (Jari Kelingking) but when I looked into the shape, it is more like a T Rex Dinasour Cliff shape sleeping in the sea! When we reached there, there was a huge crowd of tourists queuing up for photos at the favourite spot and some of them went down the cliff to the beach. It will take you an hour to go down and the same to go up! The stairs is very narrow and there is a bamboo railing for you to hold on, however, some points have no railing at all.

I could see some tourists swam at the beach with the huge waves around. Erm, we didn't dare to go down since the sun heat was very strong and we might get tired quickly and hungry somemore.. 😂😂

We didn't spend so much time here since the crowd became bigger and bigger hence we moved on to Paluang Cliff which situated just a 5 minutes drive from Kelingking Beach.

Paluang Cliff

The view in Paluang Cliff is basically almost the same with the Kelingking Beach. It is just at the other side of the T Rex Cliff. The view here is wider and no crowd at all.

The bamboo boat. Wider view of the cliff from here. Rp10k for snapping pictures here in combination with the 2 photos below

The bird nest 1

The second bird nest

There are a bamboo replica boat built in here with the extension of 5 meters from the edge of the cliff for you to take photos with a small fee of Rp10k, inclusive another 2 bird nests replica nearby.

After taking photos, we went for our lunch at the nearby restaurant.

After the lunch, we decided to skip Crystal Bay Beach and went to Tembeling Beach & Forests.

Tembeling Beach & Forests

A quite rare tourist spots since we only met few foreigners here and the place quite beautiful and peacefully! If you love jungle, it is suggested for you to come here, you may get the tropical rainforests, the nature pool, the hidden caves, the white sandy beaches with mossy stones around and the cliff jumping spots.

In order to go the attractions, you need to ride a bike since the path is too narrow for car to go in. No worries if you don't how to ride since the locals provide you motorbike service with a fee of Rp100k return from the entrance to the spot. The ride down and up along the path is quite crazy and you need to hold both the person and bike to ensure you not falling down from the bike! Oh my....

Staircase down to the pool. This is just a part of it. Ok?

After reaching the bike parking, we need to go down the spiral stairs towards the natural pools. I didn't count however how many stairs we went down but I guess its approximately 300 - 400 steps maybe. There are two crystal clear blue water pools down there, the first is bigger (and deeper). A number of traditional statues and fountains spotted at the first pool and are used for water ritual. Moving down several stairs, I could see the second pool which is smaller and shallower. From the second pool you can keep an eye on the beach which situated just hundreds meters ahead.

The first pool. Beautiful colour of water

The hidden caves

The second pool, not far from the hidden cave

And the stunning view beach!

After taking photos at the beach, the pool, the hidden cave and have a quick rest, we started to hike back to bike parking. You need to be fit enough to come to this spot since it requires you to hike up and down few hundred stairs to get to the spots.

Tired. I think its enough for the day and we asked Supir to send us to our hotel, Bagus Cottage which is situated at the other side of the Island. The journey took around 40minutes.

We checked in, have a pray and take a rest. The Cottage is just in front of the beach and I could saw Mount Agung from the here. A very scenic spot for sunset, hence, around 6pm, I decided to have a beach walk / lite jog around the Cottage but it only last for few hundred meters before returning back to hotel when a dog at the nearby restaurant non stop barking at me!!

The calm beach.. Not much people around

Sunset mode... From our Cottage

The cottage surrounding is very quite especially at night and there is no halal restaurant around. Since we didn't bring any food for overnight here, we only had maggi, bought from nearby stall for our dinner that night...Sigh...

Day 2

On the second day, we covered East Coast part of Nusa Penida Island. Early morning, after the simple breakfast at the Cottage, we have been brought by our Supir to the Diamond Beach, approximately 1 hour journey from the Cottage.

Diamond Beach

Since there is no proper car park so far here, our Supir parked the car on the hill nearby hence we need to walk down the hill for 500m approximately to the Beach.

View - way to Atuh or Diamond Beach

There are two beaches side by side, on the left side is Atuh Beach and the right side is Diamond Beach. We didn't go down to the Atuh Beach however.

On my left side is Atuh Beach

On the right side is Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach is one of the most beautiful and amazing beach that I had ever been. It is named after the pointy diamond shaped rock on the beach. To get to the beach, you need to descent down the narrow stone stairs, some part got rope handle and some part nothing for you to hold on. It tooks you around 10 minutes to go down and maybe more time to hike up if you are not fit enough or if the crowd is huge. The diamond shaped rocks and small island around the beach is just looks like the 12 Apostles in Melbourne, Australia.

The stairways to the beach

We didn't go down near the beach since it was very wavy on that day, hence we just spent our time by swinging at the cliff down there and it seems to be the scarious activities that I did in my life. What about if I fell down the cliff and directly went into the sea? Without the life jacket? Errmmm...but no harm to try if you are brave enough. The fees for the swing is Rp100k, for about 5 - 10 minutes.

The staff plugged the safety strap into my waist before pulling me into the sea

And they pulled me.. So I screamed to the best I could. Acrophobia.

After snapping some photos around (and videos), we hike up the stone stairs since the crowd became bigger and bigger and the only way to go up is only the narrow stairs! Total spending hour here was around 1.5hrs.

Waiting for the turn to go up as it is a one way route

Molenteng Tree House

Basically, this location is a chalet for tourists and you can booked the accommodation through Agoda or Booking.com. Situated adjacent to the Diamond Beach and you may reach there by 20 minutes walking down the cliff or 5 minutes by car via different route.

Breathtaking view from Rumah Pohon

The spot nearby also good for photo and very very beautiful

The stairways to Rumah Pohon.. Not bad!!

Whats special here is the beautiful views of the cliffs and the beach from the tree house. Small islands surrounded with turquoise colour wavy sea looks so charming from the tree house.  The house was built on a tree that has partially cut down the trunk so the house can stand upright. In order to get to the houses, again, you need to went down hundreds stone stairs but this time wider but longer than the Diamond Beach's.

Its very tiring to hike up the stairs when the sun heating your body. I hiked up slowly to the parking lot while my friend awaiting us at the restaurant nearby the parking lot since she not willing to hike down and up the stairs....

Vegetarian spaghetti. Ok lah.. Rather than nothing!

We, after that, went for lunch at the nearby restaurant, I ordered Vegetarian Spaghetti while my friend ordered Vegetable Soup. Its quite hard to get proper Muslim Restaurant in Nusa Penida actually. That's why I think most of the tourist went here for a day trip, I guess.

I feel bored with the beaches, so, we asked Supir to bring us to the different kind of view. He suggested Teletubbies Hill.

Teletubbies Hill

Maybe we came at the wrong time, so the landscape of the hills was not beautiful as we saw in the google picture.

The view that we got

The grass not as green as it supposedly to be but still, you can have beautiful photos here if you have the right angle for it. It was said that there is a lavender here but I couldn't see any. What I could see during our present to the hill was few cows feeding the grass. That's all. I believe, if you come at the right time (which I am not sure exactly when), you may see undulating green grass pasture covered the hills over there, and maybe lavenders??

No people here upon our arrival, hence we quickly snapped few photos before make a move.

It's quite early to go to the jetty since our boat was scheduled at 5pm and the time when we left Teletubbies hill is only 2pm. We don't know where to go, so the Supir just randomly brought us to the newly built in temple which was under construction. Nothing special here, its just a temple anyway.

The temple which was under construction

No choice but to go the to the port, Toya Pakeh Harbour, to wait for our ferry to Sanur. The Supir left us at the port since he got to attend religious ceremony in the same evening.

Nusa Penida Port. Mount Agung can be seen from here. You spotted it?

The journey back to Sanur is very challenging since the sea was damn wavy and I almost vomited in the boat due to the shaky and joggle boat. After the 40minutes passed through the wavy sea, we, finally arrived at Sanur Port, but faced another challenge as the tide is high and we need to go down from the boat into the water which the deeper was up to our thigh. No exceptions to our bags and jeans. All wet!

The high tide in the evening when we reached the Sanur Port

From Sanur Airport, we have been picked up by another Supir. He brought us for a dinner at a restaurant nearby Denpasar before sending us to our hotel in Kuta. The taste of the meals particularly Nasi Ayam is not bad at all.

Nasi Ayam

We went back to the hotel and have a rest. The next day will be the our last day in Bali Island...

Day 3

The visit was my second visits to Bali. Hence, I have no idea where to go firstly since we not intend to hike to the waterfall nor to the temple. Most of the places has been covered during my first trip.

We have been told by the Supir that most of the road in rural areas or nearby the temple will be crowded due to the religious festival that Hindus celebrating for at the same day, hence, they not recommended us to go to the rural attractions. Instead, they suggested us few places such as Tanah Lot (I've been there before), Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, Canggu Rice Field and lastly to Krishna, the Souvenier Shop.

Tanah Lot

Not much people to the temple since the tide is high and the securities not allow us to go to the edge of the rocky beach due to the big and crashing wave. We just spend around 15 minutes here, snapping photo before heading towards Canggu Rice Field.

The Arch to the temple

The temple on top of rocky beach

Tanah Lot is an ancient Hindu temple complex situated on the rocky beach. if the tide is low, you may see a lot of Hindus attend the temple for pray with Kebaya for women and for men, shirts and sarong. Entrance fee for Tanah Lot is Rp30k but it may vary from time to time.

Along the way to the Sacred Monkey Forest, we stopped by at Canggu Rice Field to take few photos. Not really attractive but at least different view (since most of our view since the past 2 days are beaches!)

Canggu rice field

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, Alas Kedaton

This attraction is a sanctuary and natural habitat of the Balinese long-tailed Monkey, scientific name Macaca fascicularis. Very quite and lonely place. We were the only visitor in the morning, it looks like the place not well maintained or promoted, maybe. The entrance fee is Rp80k per person. After entering the gate, we could see plenty of monkeys with different sizes and most of them are very tame. But, it is still a monkey hence be careful of your eyewear, bags or whatever you hold as they might jump into you and grab it!

The tame monkey. Thats my nervous face 🙈

The signage of Alas Kedaton. The monkeys are everywhere

They ate the potato without bother our precense

And this is the giant bat....

The monkeys fed with potatoes. Looks like so yummy when every of them ate the potato without bothering our presence there. There is a female guide that will accompany you tour the park.

Other than the monkeys, the other animal that might catch your eyes are the giant bat, the bat is very big, triple or more than the size of normal bat!

Since nothing much special about this places exception if you are monkey lover, we spend here less than an hour before went for lunch and depart to Krishna. A lot of souvenir shops around but the seller will take turn to open the shop (demand more than supply).

Nasi ayam betutu, lunch before going back to KL

Our last destination before we went to Airport is Krishna, the souvenier shop. Even a bit pricy but it is a one stop centre where you can find all kinds of souvenirs including sarung batik, key chain, begs, and whatsoever.

Its too early to go to the Airport but we have no choice since we don't know where to go and its very tiring. Somemore, we will reach KL quite late and both of us are working the next day.

We checked in and awaiting for our flight back to the KL in the Boarding Gate for hours (since we reached too early).

For Nusa Penida, we used the service of Percutian Bali. You may contact Mr Chandra at +6285248193813. Good service and good photographer as well, Very recommended to have their service for your holiday in both Bali and Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida is very beautiful island, newly explored, less facilities and for some places, locals are working to improve the facilities to accommodate the volume of tourists to the Island. A calm island as compared to Bali but since the road is not very smooth and tortuous, you might need to spare some medicine to avoid you vomiting in the middle of the road. Be prepared for some food also if you are Muslims and wanna spend overnight on the Island. Overall, its very exciting and calm journey since I have been surrounded by the nature that makes me forgot all the real world problem, for a while.
